The 'Anti' Facebook

So I read this article today about a new social media site that is trying to be the anti Facebook.  The new site is called Unthink.  They are claiming to be different and unique unlike Facebook.  Basically they are trying to be the hipster version of social media.  The main goal of Unthink is that they want users to be the owners of their profile, which is the opposite of Facebook.  They claim that Facebook owns their users profiles because they can put whatever advertisements on there that they want.  With Unthink you get to choose a company of your intersst to sponsor your profile.  So if you like Bud Light you could choose them to publish ads on your profile.  If you do not want any ads on your page you can choose to pay $2 a year instead.  This is a pretty cool idea, although most people aren't that concerned about what ads are on their profile.  There are also a couple of other features on Unthink such as the privacy control and an area for connecting with business colleagues that are different than Facebook.  When signing up for Unthink you also get and app that allows you to import all your Facebook media directly to Unthink, which is pretty convenient.  Overall Unthink has a new approach that is unique, but once again Facebook is huge and is going to be nearly impossible to take over.

  1. Thats a cool idea to bring in new users, giving people the choice to take away ads is catching on to many different sites. The more choices you can provide your clients the more user-friendly you seem, which then turns around and creates mass amount of people joining your site. Very intelligent approach to trying to set themselves apart and create an advantage over the huge favorite facebook.

  2. It will be very hard for this platform to succeed without the significant funding from ads. How do they expect to make money? Will people actually want to take the time to choose their own ads? Doesn't Facebook sort of do that for us already? Lots of questions but it will be fun to see if they succeed.

  3. As Facebook continue to grow bigger there are so many dislike voices about Facebooks and obviously, Facebook didn't handle their software well when every time they update a new version. I am always tired of when they have a update to any new features. They didn't had enough time to explain and it was always force users to use their new versions. I think more and more people will dislike Facebook in the future due to their lack of technical issues.

  4. I find this site to be really interesting. On the one hand I agree that it would be cool to decide which advertisements appear on your page or not, I would have to say that I don't pay enough attention to advertisements for that to matter. As of right this second I can't think of a single advertisement that I have seen on Facebook. I think that the fact that you can choose which advertisements would prevent smaller unknown companies from advertising on their sites. Additionally, without the extremely large member base that Facebook has I doubt that they will be able to pull very many larger companies. I agree with what Chris said about it being hard for this platform to succeed.
